Doctor Who: Audience and Industry

 Audience

1) Who is the target audience for Doctor Who? Do you think it has changed since 1963?
The target audience is mainstream , people who like sci-fi. I think it hasn't changed that much as it is still mainstream but due to the new diversity implemented everyone could see themselves in the show therefor the target audience is larger as rather than an old, white male doctor different ethnicities, genders and ages have been the doctor in recent times.

2) What audience pleasures are offered by Doctor Who - An Unearthly Child? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.

Personal Identity: A teenager could relate to Susan being viewed as different and how she is rebellious to her parent figure and adults (mostly parents) could relate to the teachers concern for Susan.

Personal Relationships: The cliffhanger makes the audience want to see how the teachers will get back to there time/ how they will adapt and react to this surreal experience .

Diversion (Escapism):The genre is sci-fi so the concepts like aliens and time travel are different to our knowledge of the world which means the audience can escape into that reality.

Surveillance (Information / Facts): A new audience (not in 1963) could gain information about technology/ how shows were created in 1963 and all audiences could learn about scientific possibilities like time travel.

3) What additional Uses and Gratifications would this episode provide to a modern 2020s audience?
Surveillance- learning information about the history of creating tv shows

4) Thinking of the 3 Vs audience pleasures (Visceral, Vicarious and Voyeuristic pleasures), which of these can be applied to An Unearthly Child?
Visceral- excited or on edge when the TARDIS takes off, Vicarious- experiencing time travel and meeting aliens through the characters, Voyeuristic- seeing Susan argue with the Doctor.

5) What kind of online fan culture does Doctor Who have? Give examples.

Industries

1) What was the television industry like in 1963? How many channels were there?
There were two TV channels in the UK in 1963:BBC and ITV. Doctor Who aired on BBC.

2) How does An Unearthly Child reflect the level of technology in the TV industry in 1963?
It reflects the technology of the time as it is in black and white and there is not much variety of different and unique shots with more hand held camera shots than there would be now. In addition, the time travel scene shows they don't have the technology to use good CGI and VFX.

3) Why is Doctor Who such an important franchise for the BBC?
Doctor Who is such an important franchise for the BBC as it has a big and mainstream fandom which helps to fund future episodes

4) What other programmes/spin-offs are part of the wider Doctor Who franchise?
K9, Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood, Class

5) Why does the Doctor Who franchise have so much merchandise available? Give examples.
