Film Industry: I, Daniel Blake
1) Independent cinema is when films are directed to a more niche audience and have lower budget and have smaller marketing however directors usually have more creative freedom when making it .This is contrasting with Hollywood blockbusters as they have a huge budget and not as much creative freedom as they have to appeal to a mainstream audience.
2) I, Daniel Blake is about a man who recently had a heart attack meaning he has to find a new job and is denied benefits if he doesn't. Daniel meets a single mother of two kids who is also struggling with benefits and Daniel starts protesting.
3) Ken Loach directed I, Daniel Blake which is important as he is a director who is well known for his authentic movies and social commentary meaning this movie is made with the intent to have a heavy message rather than to be a cash grab.
4) I, Daniel Blake was promoted with traditional methods along with more creative and disruptive marketing methods such as premiering in Newcastle to gain local support and organised free (or ‘pay what you can’) screenings and talks in community centres across the UK to build local enthusiasm for the film’s message.
5) They organised pay what you can screenings and talks in community centres across the UK to build local enthusiasm for the film’s message. Also Jeremy Corbyn attended the London premiere and people that had been denied benefit payments were asked to placard the event.
6) The estimated budget is around £2 million.
7) I believe movies like I, Daniel Blake can't really compete with Hollywood blockbusters like Black Widow (at least in terms of revenue and profit) as indie movies are so niche and low budget not as many people will watch it .Therefor, revenue will be lower for these independent films .However, I, Daniel Blake used very disruptive and creative methods of marketing which is very smart as it created commotion and headlines which made more people interested in and talk about the message the movie is spreading.
8) BBFC rated I, Daniel Blake as a 15.
9) It was rated this due to the infrequent use of very strong language.
10) I, Daniel Blake eventually made $12.45 million worldwide including $4.27 million in the UK and $6.4 million in France. This is a healthy profit for a small independent film such as this which illustrates its success as an indie film however compared to high budget blockbusters the numbers don't really compare.
